Hello, dear reader! My name is Maria, and I have been living in a large city for over 10 years.
Once, a big city enticed me with opportunities, bright lights, and endless activity. But by the age of 40, I suddenly realized very clearly: I want silence. I want my own home — a little corner where I can breathe out and just live.
Today, I want to share with you the story of this realization — without pomp and high-flown phrases, just personal experience and honest observations.
Why I Started Dreaming of My Own Home: A Personal Experience of a City Resident

How the City Started to Overwhelm Me
At first, everything was wonderful: walks, 24‑hour cafés, metro five minutes away. But gradually, «little» irritants accumulated, turning into constant background stress:
- Noise 24/7. Car engines, sirens, neighbors renovating, music from cafés below — even at night, the city never quiets down. I started to notice that it became harder to fall asleep, and fatigue built up.
- Crowdedness. The apartment feels like a «box», the yard is a parking lot, the park is 20 minutes away on foot. Personal space shrinks down to the size of a room.
- Crowds. Metro at rush hour, queues in stores, people in elevators… Sometimes it felt like I had forgotten what silence looked like.
- Ecology. Air with a gasoline smell, dust, lack of greenery. In spring, I first caught myself thinking: «When was the last time I really breathed fresh air?»
- Speed. Everything needs to be done quickly: eat, get somewhere, reply, be on time. Even rest turned into a «to‑do list»: cinema, restaurant, exhibition.
One day, I realized: I’m not really living — I’m just «functioning». Then, the thought came: what if… I had my own home?
Dreaming of a Home: What Exactly Do I Imagine?
My ideal «dream home» isn’t a mansion with columns, but a cozy space where:
- Silence. You can hear a leaf fall, birds singing, rain pattering.
- Your land. A small garden where I decide what to plant. A barbecue grill, swings for an evening with a book.
- Freedom of layout. I want an office with a big window, a veranda for morning coffee, a hobby room — and all of it mine.
- Safety and privacy. No nosy neighbors behind the wall, no strange cars under the windows.
- Connection with nature. Trees, grass, sky — not through glass, but in real life.
Why After 40?
I noticed that many of my acquaintances started thinking about moving out of the city around this age. Why?
According to research data (for example, surveys by real estate agencies and sociological centers), the peak interest in country properties falls between 35 and 50 years old. The reasons:
- Accumulated resources. By this age, financial stability often appears: savings, steady job, and income.
- hanging priorities. Career is no longer the main focus: quality of life, health, time with family matter more.
- Fatigue from the pace. The body literally screams: «Enough running!» There’s a desire to slow down.
- Family and children. Parents think about where to raise children: clean ecology, safety, space.
- Health. Allergies, insomnia, chronic fatigue — city life often exacerbates these problems.
Of course, this isn’t a rule for everyone. Some are happy in the metropolis until old age, while others run to the countryside at 25. But for me, 40 became that point where «want» turned into «need».
City vs. Home: My «Pros» and «Cons»

Let’s be honest: moving isn’t a cure‑all. Each lifestyle has its benefits and drawbacks. Here’s how I see them.
Pros of the Metropolis (What I’m Still Grateful For):
- Infrastructure: everything within walking distance.
- Jobs: more opportunities for career growth.
- Entertainment: theaters, concerts, restaurants.
- Transport: metro, taxis, car‑sharing.
Pros of Owning a Home (What I Really Miss):
- Silence and peace: I sleep like a baby.
- Personal space: no one jumping over your head, no listening to someone else’s music or TV shows.
- Nature: waking up and seeing trees, not concrete.
- Freedom: I can build a gazebo, get a dog, plant a garden.
- Health: fresh air, less stress.
Cons of a Country House (Important to Know):
- Distance: longer commutes to work or study, to the doctor too.
- Expenses: heating, repairs, yard maintenance.
- Isolation: not everyone likes «silence» that borders on ringing in the ears.
What’s Next?
Right now, I’m in the «dream → plan» stage. I’m exploring options, calculating the budget. And you know what’s the most important? I no longer feel guilty about this desire. Before, I thought: «How can this be, the city gave me opportunities. And I want to run away.» But now I understand: it’s not fleeing. It’s seeking balance. It’s the right to silence.
And You?
Dear reader, have you ever dreamed of your own home? At what age did this idea come to you? What inspires you, and what scares you about the idea of moving? Share in the comments — I’m truly interested!
Living in the metropolis is great. But sometimes, you need to stop, take a deep breath, and ask yourself: «What do I really want?» For me, the answer became obvious: my own home. My island of calm in the ocean of city fuss.
Until next time,
Maria!
